Flow, embroidery process.
When Covid 19 sent my kiddos home and shut down the world. I turned to more hand making methods of art. I put down procreate, photoshop, illustrator and picked up my paints, pencils and paper. I even started a project where I sent wee little paintings all over the world! My paintings are more hybrid, mix media fun little images meant to bring smiles and a little beauty to the receiver!
When my Master’s program started I moved away from paint and picked up hand work, women’s work and started playing with embroidery again. It is a slow methodical process, I use this time to meditate think and develop ideas. I moving in the direction of feminist art. Looking at my own experiences as a mother, wife, cancer survivor, rape victim and human. The title of the series of works will be The Body Remembers.
The Body Remember #1, 2020
Embroidery Floss and Canvas
3” x 5” on 7” x 7” canvas.
The Body Remembers is based on the the book The Body Keeps the Score ; Brain, Mind, and the Body in the Healing of Trauma, by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D.. I am only a couple chapters in but have already found so much insight and wisdom into how I react to others, why I may feel a certain way or how I may treat others. I am hoping this exploration will launch my thesis research and help me develop a richer art practice.
